Design Optimization- Implement a Search Engine friendly Navigation Menu

Search Engine needs to know how to navigate within your site so that it can find all your pages. Implementing a flash or dynamic JavaScript navigation menu will certainly prevent the Search Engine to find your links. In addition, position your menu at the correct place will yield the best results.

Proper positioning of navigation menu

It is very common to see a top or left navigation menu nowadays. There is nothing wrong in placing the navigation menu on the top or left of your webpage but it is not advisble to make the navigation menu codes appear before the page content, confused? The reason is this, Search Engine places great emphasis on content near the top of the page, so having a fully dynamic JavaScript menu before any content is undesirable. We can overcome this problem by using either of the two methods.

The first method is to place your navigation menu on the right or bottom of the webpage. Some webmasters have designed their webpages such a way that the navigation links are all located in the right of the page so that the codes are found after the content. This is a less commonly used but easy to implement.

A better solution is to use the powerful CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) positioning property. You can still make the menu appear on the left of the page with the menu codes found after the content. To understand this concept better, you would most probably need an advanced knowledge of CSS.

Text links as menu

Using textlinks for navigation menu is the most reliable way to ensure that Search Engine will not miss out any of your pages. However, if you still prefer fanciful menu, include a textlink version at the bottom of the pages for the sake of indexing.
